empowerment and employment of survivors of human trafficking: A business guide

Safe and sustainable employment is one of the most effective ways to prevent the exploitation of vulnerable individuals and the re-exploitation of survivors of human trafficking and other forms of slavery. This guide describes actions business can take to empower and employ survivors; and explains the types of organizations that companies can look to for partnership support, including real-world case examples.

Trauma-Informed Company training

GBCAT and Futures Without Violence have developed this virtual training for businesses that aim to employ survivors of human trafficking.

The training is specifically designed for people managers who oversee the work of new employees who may have experienced trauma. It provides background and practical recommendations for managers to better support survivors of human trafficking in the workplace.

A business that understands and respects the needs of trauma survivors and fosters an environment in which survivors of trafficking feel safe, supported, integrated, and empowered will find that these benefits create a better place to work for all employees.

The training can be delivered in a group setting, using the Facilitators’ Guide. Facilitators may include corporate leaders who oversee survivor employment programs, Human Resources team members, or external consultants in the training.

BUILDING TRAUMA-INFORMED WORKPLACES: CASE STUDIES

GBCAT interviewed several organizations – including The Market Project, Marriott International and GFEMS and Outland Denim – to learn about their programs to employ and empower survivors of human trafficking, and their efforts to implement a trauma-informed workplace that enables all employees to thrive.

We discussed how they had got started with survivor employment and empowerment, key challenges of adopting a trauma-informed approach, and lessons learned for business.

These case studies accompany GBCAT’s Business Guide on Empowerment and Employment of Survivors of Human Trafficking and the Trauma-Informed Company Training.
